“AARIVA” is a project by Poornamala M, MA Fashion Communication 2024 batch, at JD Institute. Inspired by the intricate beauty of traditional Aari embroidery, the project explores the theme of contemporary craftsmanship, wearability, and cultural reinterpretation. It aims to transform Aari embroidery from heavily ornamented occasion wear into versatile, modern garments while responding to the evolving lifestyle and fashion preferences of contemporary consumers.
The project is designed for modern women seeking clothing that balances elegance, comfort, and cultural craftsmanship within everyday and occasion-based fashion. Their need for lightweight, versatile, and aesthetically refined garments remains central to the design process.The design approach focuses on minimalism, functionality, and subtle detailing, ensuring that the garments remain practical while preserving the authenticity of handcrafted embroidery. Through research into traditional Aari techniques and contemporary fashion trends, the project identifies the need for embroidery-based apparel that feels adaptable, breathable, and suitable for regular wear.
Materials such as lightweight and breathable fabrics were selected to enhance comfort and versatility, while hand-executed Aari embroidery techniques were adapted through simplified motifs and minimal placement strategies to achieve a refined contemporary look. Visually, the project is defined by soft color palettes, delicate embroidery accents, clean silhouettes, and understated detailing, reflecting sophistication, subtle craftsmanship, and modern elegance. The final outcome, a contemporary clothing line featuring kurtis, co-ord sets, statement blouses, and lightweight dupattas, embodies the harmony between traditional artistry and everyday functionality while seeking to make handcrafted embroidery more accessible to modern lifestyles.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the evolving relevance of traditional embroidery within contemporary fashion, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation, accessibility, and modern expression. Ultimately, “AARIVA” stands as a reflection of how heritage craftsmanship can be thoughtfully adapted into wearable contemporary fashion, where tradition and practicality coexist seamlessly.
