A Weaver’s Tide by Sheena Myra Da Cunha

“A Weaver’s Tide” is a fashion collection by Sheena Myra Da Cunha, a designer of BSc Fashion and Apparel Design 2023 at JD School of Design, Goa. Inspired by the coastal lifestyle of Goa and the craftsmanship of traditional fishing communities, the collection explores the theme of cultural reinterpretation, femininity, and artisanal innovation. It aims to transform handmade fishing nets from functional tools into contemporary semi-luxury resort wear while responding to the growing demand for unique, craft-driven fashion experiences.

Design Brief

The collection is designed for confident and expressive women aged 25–35 who seek distinctive resort wear for beach vacations, tropical events, and luxury getaways, keeping their desire for individuality, comfort, and style at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on innovation, wearability, craftsmanship, and contemporary aesthetics, ensuring that the collection remains both visually striking and functional. Through research into traditional fishing practices and local artisanal techniques, the collection identifies the potential of reimagining overlooked coastal materials within a fashion context.

Materials such as handmade fishing nets, lachka fabric, cotton lining, shells, pebbles, stones, and floaters were combined using techniques including fishnet knotting, layering, draping, knotting, and textile manipulation to create fluid yet structured silhouettes. Visually, the collection is defined by ocean-inspired neutrals, sandy beiges, soft whites, earthy browns, sheer textures, and fluid forms, reflecting the freedom, movement, and serenity of coastal landscapes. The final outcome, a semi-luxury resort wear collection, embodies confidence, elegance, and artisanal storytelling, seeking to offer a fresh perspective on beachside fashion.Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight the value of traditional craftsmanship and material innovation, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation and creative transformation. Ultimately, “A Weaver’s Tide” stands as a reflection of reinvention and craftsmanship, demonstrating how everyday coastal materials can be elevated into contemporary fashion that celebrates both heritage and modern luxury.
