From Fragments to Art by Vaibhaavi Srinivas

“From Fragments to Art” is a project by Vaibhaavi Srinivas,  an MSc Interior Design 2024 batch student at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the imaginative world of children and the expressive qualities of mosaic art, the project explores the theme of creativity, learning, and sensory engagement through architectural design. It aims to create a joyful and stimulating educational environment that supports the cognitive, emotional, and social development of young learners while responding to the evolving needs of early childhood education spaces.

Design Brief

The project is designed for children from nursery to 4th grade, keeping safety, inclusivity, interaction, and curiosity at the core of the design process. Conceived as a child-centric primary school campus, the project transforms architecture into an interactive learning tool where classrooms, play zones, corridors, and outdoor spaces encourage exploration and creativity. The design approach focuses on functionality, flexibility, sensory stimulation, and child-friendly spatial planning, ensuring that the outcome is both educational and emotionally engaging.

Through research into early childhood learning environments and the artistic language of mosaic craft, the project identifies the importance of visually interactive and adaptable spaces in enhancing children’s learning experiences. Materials such as mosaic tiles, natural finishes, soft textures, and vibrant colour palettes, along with techniques including storytelling surfaces, interactive installations, playful spatial zoning, and outdoor learning integration, were chosen to achieve a dynamic and immersive environment.
Visually, the project is defined by colourful mosaic compositions, geometric patterns, playful forms, and tactile surfaces that reflect imagination, diversity, and creativity. The final outcome, a primary school campus, embodies inclusivity, curiosity, and joyful learning while seeking to create memorable educational experiences for children.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how craft and architecture can work together to shape meaningful learning environments, positioning design as a tool for creativity, engagement, and holistic child development. Ultimately, “From Fragments to Art” stands as a reflection of individuality coming together to create collective growth, where every fragment contributes to a vibrant and inspiring world of learning.
